A garden built for the coast.

When the high tide reaches the back door, the design brief writes itself. This true coastal garden design in Southern Tasmania was shaped entirely by the elements — wind, salt, sand and sun driving every decision toward resilient, local and native species that have spent generations learning to thrive here.

Step inside the gate and the mood shifts. A lush enclosure of local natives creates immediate privacy and a sense of arrival, a sheltered world that feels hard-won against the elements beyond. Permeable Tas gold gravel allows rainfall to sink back into the earth, while generous organic mulch holds moisture deep into the drier months. Sandstone walls, steppers and boulders echo the coastal tones, and the planting palette plays off the ocean blues and misty silvers of kunyani / Mount Wellington on the horizon.

Colourful perennial natives move in the wind, punctuating the garden with seasonal interest and drawing the eye through the space. The resident echidna, carefully accommodated throughout the build, now moves freely between a network of nooks and foraging spots, a reminder that the best gardens make room for everyone.
