Where the dunes meet design.

Perched above the rolling dunes of Clifton Beach, this coastal garden design in southern Tasmania was shaped entirely by its surroundings. With an annual rainfall of just 490mm and relentless onshore winds, the planting needed to be as resilient as it was beautiful.

Sandstone drawn from the family’s own farm speaks directly to the local geology, while a palette of silvers, blues and textural greens creates an easy coherence with the coastal hues beyond the fence line. Dancing wrens, seasonal butterflies and the occasional wallaby find sanctuary here, drawn in by plantings that offer shelter without closing the garden off from its wild neighbours.

Spaces for entertaining, play and surf checks are woven through ambling paths and a gently meandering driveway that invites the family outside rather than directing them. An open lawn, sustained by the home’s greywater system, anchors the heart of the garden. Because when the beach is at your door and the light is doing what Tasmanian light does, that’s exactly where everyone wants to be.
